Kigam was established on may 22 1918 as the national geological survey of Korea (1918~1945), developed as a government-branched research organization (1946-1976), grown into a government-funded independent R&D institute (1976~present). Kigam is the Korea's only government-supported geoscience research institute with the history of 100 years in 2018. Today, we have 4 research divisions focusing (1) geological survey (2) mineral resources research (3) petroleum and marine research and (4) geologic environment research. as for the Kigam's future energy stabilization R&D strategy, we are focusing on non-traditional energy methods, gas-hydrate research, marginal oil and gas production, artificial recharge groundwater technology. secondly, we aim for the world-class R&D geoscience technology such as rare metal recovery, deep-sea mineral plant, mineral fusion technology, geothermal energy storage. lastly, we serve the public by providing informative research like land information, carbon dioxide disposal, earthquake disaster mitigation, coastal-slope safety, for the alerting purposes.
