Known since ancient times, the first to speak of it was Pliny the Elder (23 - 79 D.C), placing today's Altomonte in the territory of Balbia. In those days, the rock salt seemed to flourish in an extraordinary way, so much to resurface on the sandy surface. Probably the Salina was known at the time of the Magna Graecia. It is likely that much of the economic splendor of the city of Sibari (720 BCE 510 BCE) derived from the exploitation of the salt mine at Lungro. Testimony of this are some of the archaeological finds found on the site of the Salina (cocci, pottery and obsidian points) which suggest the presence of Neolithic, Magno-Greece and therefore of the Roman Empire in the Lungro area justified by the exploitation of the saline deposit . During the course of history, the mine passed under the dominion of various owners starting from Federico II and then becoming the first Royal Mine with the Savoy monarchy after the unification of Italy and State Monopoly with the Republic. The structure of the mine is vertical and is developed in nine cone-shaped inverted cones for a depth of about 260 meters. The various floors are connected by more than 2000 steps carved directly into the rock salt. The production of salt which was shown every year was 70 thousand quintals. The draw was interrupted at the end of the 1970s. The mining site is currently affected by a series of safety and recovery interventions.
