Hi there,
A few weeks ago, when I was surveying the area around Steenwijk to update our Topographical maps, I passed a geological monument called Wolterholten.
This geological monument is a collection of Glacial Erratics, which were deposited in this area during the penultimate ice age.
This area belongs to the "Woldberg", a 25 metres high hill, which is part of a moraine arc.
The Erractics on display were found during the construction of highway A32, which cuts through the western flank of the "Woldberg".
Nowadays there are 123 Erractics on this display. Originally there were 143 Erractics on display, but since the realization of the monument in 1989, 20 of those were stolen, an avarage of one Erractic a year.
More info on this monument can be found on the websites of the
KNNV and the website of
Aardkundige Waarden.
