We were invited by the Merkers mine to make 360-degrees panorama photographs underground with a fish-eye lenze; Thomas Krassmann arranged the trip and made the pictures, Thomas Witzke and I were allowed to 'assist'  wink
Some numbers and keywords  Cool
We left at 05.00 and returned 20.15, drove 820 km, and went 800 meters underground...
We drove about 20 km underground in a 4x4 car to reach the cavity and some other locations where we were allowed to look for minerals...
This mine is 140 square kilometers large underground and has about 4.000 km of  workings... the whole mining district underground is 1.000 square km large... incredible... see http://www.k-plus-s.com/gruppe/struktur.cfm
We saw a 45 meters wide cavity, up to 10 meters high, with Halit crystals to something more than 1 meters big and sometimes waterclear...
We found Carnalit crystals of which some are 2,5 cm long and Rinneit and Bischofit also on another spot

And now I'm very happy and tired  Cheesy
This was one of the best days of my life...
I will make a report sunday; I made a lot of pictures  wink

Hi Franck,

Do you know this reference:
J. W. Minette (1999) - Great pockets: The Carlsbad Halite Caves -  The Mineralogical Record, Vol. 30, pp369-372.

In this case, Halite crystals more than a meter on edge were golden yellow colored. They were discovered in the 1960's.

Tell me if you want a copy of this article.

http://giantcrystals.strahlen.org/3dpano/merkers3d.htm

Schaut mal rein und wenn ihr Lust habt, schreibt Eure Meinung dazu

Glück Auf
