29 may – 1 june 2009, Reichelsheim / Odenwald

Ancient mining

Relics of ancient mining activities are part of our European cultural landscape. Since humans learned to apply tools the extraction of stone, ores and mineral resources left its traces in the terrain. Many detailed questions about early mining techniques, the processing of extracted raw materials and also about the meaning of the mining and quarry industries for the social- economic structure and the development of settlements remain unanswered. Regarding these questions, archaeological methods could provide us with new resolution.

Protection

The traces of ancient mining activities are threatened in many European regions, because they often are not recognized as such and accordingly not treated as heritage sites. Mining archaeological research can contribute actively to the protection of historically valuable sites by means of publication and public works in order to establish a more general consciousness regarding these sites.

The International Symposium on Archaeological Mining History was established in 2006 when it was held for the first time in Reichelsheim, Germany. In 2007 the members travelled to Freiberg, also in Germany. Both assemblies, focusing on medieval mining, were succesful in bringing reseachers and officials from several European regions together in a discussion about archaeological mining history in all its aspects.

In 2008 the symposium was held in Valkenburg and Maastricht in the South of the Netherlands and in Kanne - Riemst which is a border region to Belgium. The central theme of the symposium was focused on survey, study and protecting and consolidating the relics of ancient mining activity as part of the historical landscape. In 2009 the 4th symposium was held in Reichelsheim again and focused on Recognition, Investigation and Preservation.
