Dear All,

I think that everybody once thought about it: where am I going to put my minerals?.... huh

So, one reason why you would ask this question to your self would be because you
already have so much rocks in your garage that you really don't known anymore where
to put this bucked full of interesting (you hope) stuff.

The other reason would be because you indeed found interesting things in this bucked
from the XX-quarry you visited 2 years ago  wink and you really want to keep this piece
of rock in your collection!

Besides that the first reason is just cool and I think that everybody recognizes him or herself
in this scenario I really would like to known how everyone stores their collection pieces. Shoe boxes,
buckets, MM-boxes, paper-boxes, special storage systems, or just on the windowsill, etc etc....

Just curious!

Familiar problem Tim,

I'm working on my storage to. Right now everything is stored in buckets, boxes and crates. But I think I'm going to build a storagesystem like there is one posted here on the forum.
I think I will put the individual findings in litlle plastic bags with zip-locks together with a label. The really small stuff I'm going to keep in MM-boxes. I allready worked out a plan to make a drawer in my storage filled with "piepschuim" in which I make holes to keep the MM-boxes.
But some of the real large pieces wiil remain in crates I think.

Oh, I forgot to mention where you can find the storage system. Look under Step-by-Step subject Cupboards.

hi everyone,

let me share my 'tactic' with you
I have seen many collectors use similar methods; that's how I've learned about it in the first place wink

after an excursion the collected material is put into fruit (crates), preferably one crate per locality, but should there be space for more rocks, plastic bags can be used to seperate finds from different localities. the name of the locality and date is either written on the crate or on a piece of cardboard which goes with the rocks in the bag. the crates are then stored in a shed outside the house (cellar or garage are also good but unfortunately we don't have those here).

in good time the rocks are washed (if necessary, careful not to destroy water-soluble minerals), cracked, and the sorted material put into stock flats. smaller specimens are then fixed in MM-boxes and stored in a special drawer. larger ones preferably in small plastic or cardboard boxes (although still kept in the flats).

so.. that's it. I'm eager to hear more about the methods of fellow strahlers smiley

grtz

See, the really good stuff I keep in my showcase (my wife made it for me, it's 2,5 meters high and just over 2 meters wide), there's even more in it now....
The other interesting stuff I keep in a couple of cupboards and drawers in my study.
And......we've got a very big garden, lots of rocks are dumped in  it on strategic locations by me, and ever now and then, when I'm bored, I set out and take a couple of rocks from the garden, feeling like being in my own quarry, crack them and hope to (and sometimes do!) find interesting stuff in them.

Salut

Harjo

p.s. I know a guy who has probably the best locality for finding oportunities in Belgium in his garde shed!!!!(see you saturday Mario grin )
p.s.2 Jose's garden is by far the best spot for finding Dehovite in the world!!!!

Hi,

I keep the fresh stuff in buckets and bags until I have time to clean and to determine. When I have decided which pieces to keep in the collection, I store most of the stuff right now in cardboxes and similar stuff. The best specimens I have open on several cupboards in my flat. Right now I started to contruct a wooden cupboard with drawers for more easy presentation and storage (see the attached plan).

Hi,
The storage method i use is the same as Robin's "tactic".
Most of the specimen are stored in plastic "Jousi" boxes, the larger ones in cardboard boxes.

As far as I can see, there are many ways to store your minerals. But speaking of storage. What method do you all use to store fragile or vulnerable minerals. Got some minerals from Binntal for instance and everytime you jolt or rock those minerals, pieces of the white dolomite keep falling of. What is the best way to preserve those pieces.
