In october 2007 I drove to the Munich mineral fair, and after that drove on the Tuscany for meeting Marco Barsanti. Being in Tuscany is also a nice moment to visit the marble-quarries around Carrara. I asked for permission to shoot some pictures underground in the Cava di Vara Bassa, for seeing the methodes used in cutting the large blocks of marble. In the Cava di Vara Bassa they use a large sawing-machine to take large blocks out of the cave. In doing so, they create beautiful and large hollow structures underground. Compare this to the limestone-quarries around Maastricht, and be amazed ;-)
