Cu-arsenates in an old open-pit near Khder:

In april 2008 we were invited by the CTT to spend almost a week in the region. Not for mineral collecting, but for business. When we had some time left, we also visited some interesting spots in the mining region along the road from Bou Azzer to Bleida. We also were able to visit the mines and open pits around Khder two times that week. Begin your tour here to see what we saw.

Khder is an interesting prospect for us mineral collectors... There are some interesting old open-pits, and... a new shaft is being made there (april 2008), ready to go in production somewhere around july 2008. This shaft will be working its way through the oxidation zone first (remember that the first works here only worked Cu/Co-arsenates...). So, this is a place to watch. Driving from Tazenakht to Bou-Azzer it's the first mine on the left that you'll see, so you can't miss it. I think it's ok to collect on the old dumps higher up the mountain. Although it's better to ask for permission first at the workers near the shaft...

It is not allowed to look for minerals on this site, although it's right next to the road... You have to ask permission first at the head-office. And even when you have that permission, always politely also ask permission at the local mine shift-leader and show your permit! Because the local miners are also responsible for the safety in their mine.
