(text and pictures by Robin Bakker)

Between 1998 and 2002 I visited Långbans Gruvby several times. The pictures are from my last visit. Each time it was possible to find specimens of the more common minerals like Richterite and "Schefferite" (manganoan variety of Diopside), on occassion also Svabite, Tilasite, Hedyphane and others. To find the rare minerals you will need persistance but in particular good knowledge of the material. With near 300 different species known from here, not an easy task! It's a good idea to visit the Gruvby's mineral museum before trying your luck on the dumps, so you know a bit better what to look for. Also, I can highly recommend the book "Langban: The mines, their minerals, geology and explorers" (D. Holtstam & J. Langhof, eds. ; 1999).

Most collecting is done on the dumps east of the road 26. West of that road, right next to the fenced off area, is the so-called "garden dump", which is also interesting. You will have to dig deep to get to fresh material and be prepared to use your hammer a lot, as on the outside the rocks all look the same (black).
