Title: Tucson (AZ)
Post by: Ricardo & Claudia Birnie on February 08, 2006, 01:24:23 PM
DEAR FRIENDS : WE JUST RETURNED FROM TUCSON , AND HAD THE CHANCE TO SEE DIFFERENT SHOWS.
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH ONLY ONE LIFE TO BE ABLE TO SEE ALL WHAT THIS GIGANTIC SHOW-CITY HAS TO OFFER.
AS WE ARE AGATE COLLECTORS , WE ADJUSTED TO LOOK FOR AGATES ONLY.AMONG THE BEST WE SAW , THE ONE TO MENTION IS "THE GEM SHOP" THAT WAS ALSO PRESENT AT MÜNICH FAIR 2005 WITH MAGNIFICENT AGATES.

WE ALREADY APPLIED TO HAVE OUR SHOW-ROOM AT THE INN SUITES FOR YEAR 2007.
WHAT WILL WE EXHIBIT? YES!!! AGATES.
GREETINGS FROM ARGENTINA
RICARDO & CLAUDIA BIRNIE

Frank,

I will be in Tucson from the February 14 through 17. I will be at the Arthur Roe Micromount Symposium on Friday. February 15 as I have been asked to give a presentation on Pacific Northwest collecting. I will be talking about three collecting sites near Diamond Lake in Klamath County, Oregon. I plan on driving to Tucson so that I can get in some collecting during the trip.

Hope to see you there.
Doug

I just got back from Tucson late last night.

Words and photos will never do justice to the minerals on display. We spent Thursday looking at the displays at the main show. In almost seven hours we did not see everything. I did take lots of photos. After getting back to the motel and downloading them I was not happy with them.

On Friday we went to the micromount symposium where I gave my presentation. It seemed to be well received. There were also talks on New England micro minerals by Van King, The RRUFF Project by Robert Downs, and Alabama phosphates by Henery Barwood.

On Saturday I returned to the main show with a different lens and a flash and reshot many of the photos. I now have to get them on this computer and see what I have. My wife did not accompany me on Saturaday as she was not feeling well. It was a cold she started the trip with, not the bug making the rounds at Tucson. I did meet Gail and several other folks from Mindat.

I enjoyed looking at the great minerals offered by various dealers. My only purchases were nine micromounts from England for $50.00 and two newly described species from Mont Saint-Hilaire hand deliverd by the Horvaths. It was nice to meet them as I have been dealing with them for twenty years.

On Sunday we went out to the Arizona Sonara Desert Museum and spent the day viewing the fine exhibits there. This was more on the plants and animals found in the desert but the was a small but nice exhibit of minerals. We spent the night camped near there. On Monday it was on to the Old Reliable Mine near Mammoth where we collected some nice libethenite. I have just started to look at that under the scope. Will have photos later. On Tuesday we tried to find a zeolite spot but rain overnight had the stream we had to walk up running with too much water. Wednesday we were in northern Arizona where we collected some Apache tears near the campground. It was then onto Death Valley National Park. We spent Thursday exploring the park and camped there that night. It was rather windy most of the night and we were not sure the tent would stay up. it did. We started for home on Friday and had a 320 km drive through a snowstorm along the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. We got out of the snow near Reno, Nevada. We spent the night in Susanville, California. When we left there Saturday morning we had about 80 km of icy roads to travel before we got to clear roads. We arrived home about 2230 after covering a bit over 1400 km in two days.

I also have a bunch of minerals from the giveaway table at the micro symposium to look over, trim and photograph.

It was a very good trip and the right year to go to Tucson for the first time.

Doug

It sounds like you had a very busy week, according to your story. Good to hear that your presentation was well received. I hope to see some pictures of your trip and your new minerals here on the forum.

Title: Re: Tucson (AZ)
Post by: on December 12, 2008, 08:56:27 AM
Recession? Its more the number of vacation days which is quite low and must be distributed according to a priority list. No change to "waste" 3-5 days for Tucson although I would like to see it. Would be better if the show would be in spring or autumn, then the trip could be combined with some other mineral tours....

Cheers,
Stefan

Huh? In Arizona and Mexico the sun always shines ;-)
I plan to combine it with both...
And I plan to have fun, whatever happens...

Interesting discussion here http://www.mindat.org/mesg-6-119420.html

Cheers!
Title: Re: Tucson (AZ)
Post by: on December 12, 2008, 01:31:02 PM
Yes, interesting discussion. As long somebody spends 500$ for a mineral I would not talk of recession...spending 5000$ seems silly to me (TO ME!!!). Still I am not much interested in Mexiko or Arizona. Priority would have Frankling & Co, Mountain Pass and Sudbury region. Although Pachuca in Mexiko might be interesting. There is a type of tank used for hydrometallurgical extraction of ores called "Pachuca" tank. So Pachuca is the type locality...for a tank. Is that cool? If you go there make a million photos...

Cheers,
Stefan

PS The Wismut used Pachuca tanks for uranium extraction...

Some little warning before going to Tucson:

Coming to Tucson in 2009? Beware of detours

For the year and a half, the Tucson, AZ. I-10 (Intertstate-10) freeway entrances and exits are still closed from 1-19 to Prince Road. This causes an inconvenience to unaware dealers and visitors, and even those prepared to handle the great divide.

The Interstate-10 (I-10) freeway exits at Congress are also still closed. The entire project may not end until just before or after the 2010 Tucson Gem Show.

Driving along the frontage road near Downtown is reduced to 25 mph because of the pedestrian traffic and congested vehicles due to the construction.

Just thought I'd let you know

Does anyone here has interesting tips for mineral localities to visit around Tucson?
There were a lot... but most are recultivated/closed/mined-out by specimen miners etc ;-)
Any tips are appreciated !

Cheers!

I just woke up in USA-timezone... damn jetlag...

Jordi about the beautiful (but way overpriced) new cuprite from Russia from the Rubsovskoye Mine
http://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?t=460&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=20

and Jolyon rented a chopper and flew to the Grand Reef mine http://www.mindat.org/loc-3332.html and Table Mountain http://www.mindat.org/loc-23638.html
driving to the first mine is not allowed as the landowner does not want people to cross his land to the mine.
So... what's more easy than to chopper in then ;-) Drive to the airport, hire a chopper for a day, pay, fly...

Every year in Tucson I hear some dealers happy with their sales and some dealers unhappy, but this year, for the very first time in 21 years, I've heard no complaints. All dealers seem to be happy... Strange. The customers seem to be in a good mood too.

“seems that about a 1/3 of the dealers are already displaying which, as discussed before, makes the scenario very complex for the small dealers, specially considering that a large dealer, Crystals Classics, was today already in full activity at their different rooms in the HTCC-InnSuites”

Collectors Edge wholesale outlet has beenm selling for about 6 days already. Kristalle and several others opened Monday. JTI opened today (1 day earlier than last year). And to think that the shows don't really "officially" start till next weekend. Rock Currier used to say "Tucson week was fun; Tucson month is less fun". At the time he said that, Tucson was still only 3 weeks, but now it really is a month!

http://wheretofindrocks.com/tucson-gem-and-mineral-show-2021-canceled-due-to-corona-virus-pandemic/

Already in 2010, Rock called the Tucson fairs the “Tucson International Viral Distribution Center”,
so it’s probably smart to cancel it... bad for dealers missing income, bad for visitors missing fun, but better for everyone...

Here's a new idea that will be tried next weekend in Tucson, Thursday 5 to Sunday 8. As a lot of dealers have permanent warehouses in Tucson nowadays, especially North of the center in the area around Oracle and Lester streets, they all agree to open for business on the same days, so that it becomes like a show with "social distancing", spread  out over a wide area, and open by advance reservation only, to keep the number of people in each building at any moment to some legal low number. It is expected that several collectors will think it worthwhile to drive over to Tucson from places like Los Angeles (7 or 8 hours drive), Phoenix (2 hours).

I'm planning to go for the main show (in about a week).  My friends that have been so far have been uniformly negative - prices are sky high, no really interesting new finds.  They've reported spending very little - one said he's never come home from Tucson with so much money.  I still want to go as I have never been - I usually enjoy the Denver show - but my expectations are low for coming home with anything new.

My wife and I usually go to the Denver show, but timing didn't work last fall so we thought we'd go to the Tucson show for the first time.  We visited 3 major and a handful of minor shows.  Short version: we don't aim to go again.

TGMS "Main" Show - roughly 60% jewelry and cut stones, ~15% lapidary, under 1/3 minerals - there were a few odds and ends like furniture and lamps, stuff like that.  Most of the dealers were the high-end ones who closed their Mineral City location to have a booth there.  We finished in under 2 hours.  The display cases were very nice - TGMS does a great job with those.  The venue is very nice as well - clean, modern etc.

Mineral City - had a very odd (and unpleasant) vibe.  More than half of the vendors were closed for the main show.  All the dealers felt very similar - none stood out from each other.  All the buildings were oddly subdivided, we had to keep going outside to get to other parts of the same building.  COVID outbreak due to one dealer failing to mask/close even after a positive test.

22nd Street - mostly trinkets, but a few mineral dealers scattered through.  Very clean and organized which I did not expect (the equivalent show at Denver, the National Western Complex/Coliseum show is very chaotic).  We'd intended to just hit one dealer of interest and leave, but ended up walking the whole thing as it was pretty nice.

I don't know the names of all the small shows (they are often just a few tents in a parking lot) but most of them were not very interesting - carvings, beads, wholesalers, etc.  I liked the Miner's Coop show, but that's pretty far north.

I note that the TGMS Show is at the very end of the "season" - maybe people had better finds early?  A couple of the earlier shows looked interesting (e.g. Pueblo) but were shut down by the time we got there.  Overall we did spend some money at dealers we liked (we see them at the Denver show too) but we were not thrilled with the Tucson show - glad we did it once, no particular urge to go again.  I'd still like to to Munich and Ste Marie aux Mines at some point but those are a bit harder for us to get to!

Tnx for your open - honest and clear report :)

What in your experience are good other US fairs to consider?
Denver (https://www.strahlen.org/forum/index.php/topic,1800.0.html). Santa Ana westcoast (https://www.strahlen.org/forum/index.php/topic,1804.0.html) shows? And...?

The three biggest US shows, as far as I am aware, are Tucson, Denver, and Springfield (https://www.strahlen.org/forum/index.php/topic,1803.0.html).  I haven’t been to Springfield for about 15 years, but at the time if felt like a big club show, rather than one of the big slick productions like Denver and Tucson.  With the caveat that it’s been a long time, I recommend Denver and that one. Local club shows vary, but I really like them and go to as many as I reasonably can.

(minor edit to fix typo, thanks for linking in the Springfield show)
