Dossena boasts a very respectable mining past which is said to date back to the Etruscan era. During the Roman period Dossena was an important mining center of the empire. Inside the ancient mines the slaves of Rome were condemned Ad Metalla. It is perhaps for this reason that the first church in the Brembana valley was born in this small mountain town. The mines continued their activity for centuries until their final closure in the second half of the last century. There are shows that anyone has the right to admire; natural theaters between geological conformations and mining sites of historical and cultural importance expressed in a thousand years of settlements. This is what the Dossena Mines Association intends to enhance, in order to offer the public an unusual and exciting environment to visit, full of topics of profound interest which, in some way, have interacted in everyone's history. The restoration work of the mines of Dossena, in the locality of Paglio, began in September 2014, thanks to the work of 80 volunteers coordinated by the Municipality of Dossena. The cleaning of the ancient debris, the lighting and the safety of the pre-established tunnels made possible the inauguration which took place on 6 December 2014, and the subsequent opening on 2 May 2015, along a relatively short journey through ancient mining excavations. The extension works are still in progress, in order to offer the public a more lasting and forward journey into the depths of the mountain and to relive the stories of those who have lived them.

Within the Val Parina, along the Mercatorum way, there is a very rich and varied mining district: from the zinc, lead and calamine, fluorite, blende and galena mines, to the quarries from which the valuable Arabescato Orobico marble is extracted. In the municipality of Dossena there is the mining area perhaps among those of the oldest cultivation of the Bergamo mountain. In fact, the ancient cultivation of this district seems to date back to the Bronze Age. The area was also exploited by the Etruscans and Romans. Pliny the Elder, for example, in his Naturalis Historia described the mining activity that was practiced in the Roman Empire, citing Bergamo as a place of digging calamine (understood as zinc mineral and zinc oxide) and it is likely that one of the locations to which Pliny referred was precisely the Dossena-Oltre il Colle area. The mining site of Paglio-Pignolino, thanks to the Municipality of Dossena and the Dossena Mining Association, today has been partially recovered and opened to the public, some of the tunnels have been secured and made accessible again. Inside the mine, you can see the remains of the mining activity and the miner’s everyday items, such as cans of food for lunch or work suits. The Dossena Mining Association now offers the opportunity to participate in guided tours and events organized inside the mine, while the study for the realization of a Mining Museum is underway.
