In the early 1800s, with the rediscovery of sulfur deposits, Comitini became one of the most important mining centers in the Agrigento area and its economy underwent a radical transformation from agricultural-artisan to industrial. Mandrazzi, Fiacche Vella, Buca ficu, Felicia, Salt mine, Stretto Cuvello, Rametta, Pizzo mine, Crocilla Grande and Crocilla Principe, are some of the 70 mines in operation in the early twentieth century of which historical memory remains. It seems that 10.000 workers were employed every day for the extraction of the mineral. The discovery of some fragments of a Sulphurous Tabula with a raised writing "Officina Commodiana" at c.da Puzzu Rosi, confirms that the ancient Romans exploited the Comitinese mineral starting from 180 AD. and that already in the sixteenth century. B.C. the inhabitants of a prehistoric village on the Cumatino hill (Monte Castellaccio) seem to intensify sulfur-related trade with the Aegean peoples. The entire forge of sulfur production, according to archaic methods (calcarelle, calcheroni, gill ovens, descents), is still visible today, visiting the sulfur mines in the municipality of Comitini, recently recovered. In the Municipality of Comitini you can also visit the mining and mineralogical museum at the baronial palace "Bellacera".
