The Cozzo Disi Mine Museum, founded by R.L. 17/1991, since 2013 is managed by the Casteltermini Municipality. It was one of the most large and important sulphur mine in Europe. The mining activity started in the end of XVIII century thanks to Count of Bastiglia and was increased during all the XIX and XX c., employing thousands of workers and miners coming from many neighbouring villages. The sulphur mine area, near the Campofranco railway station, extent of 55 hectares, contains all the technical sulphur fusion systems, in their historical evolution: calcarelle, calcheroni, Gill kilns, steam-engine of 1910, exceptional example in Europe. Its underground extends until the 12th level. Between 1952 and 1955 a very large flotation system was built. With the R.L. 34/1988 Sicilian Region closed the mining activity and sulphur mines included the Sicilian Mining Body, founded by the R.L. 2/1963. In 1990 all the Cozzo Disi sulphur area was declared as an important cultural heritage (D.A. 2830 of 1990, Nov. 12th) and since 1991 Sicilian Region has funded a lot of maintenance and restoration interventions in the underground structures, and regarding the electric power station, the steam-engine, the lamp-store, electric and security installations, and museum furnitures. The Cozzo Disi Mine-Museum, is not open to public till now, even if since 2015 is furnished with a management plan.
