We took our daughter to the Darwin expo in Naturalis (Leiden, Neth.) today.
So, I had a chance to have a look at the mineral collection they have, it's not large but I was nevertheless surprised at the quality of some of the specimens.
I saw a very nice Bourg d'Oisans Axinite, a huge Altyin Tyube Dioptase (very good quality), a nice Knappenwand piece, a piece with two huge Binn Anatases, very nice St Andreasberg Apophylite, a HUGE Tokovaya Emerald piece, nice Russian Heliodor, two nice smoky Gwindels from the Gotthard and much more.
I didn't really like the way the minerals where exhibited though, could be much better, also the lack of proper descriptions of the minerals is a drawback, in a lot of cases the provenance of a piece doesn't get beyond the country, not even a region is sometimes mentioned, let alone a mine.....
Nevertheless the museum boasts a nice collection, worth a visit.
Cheers
