New symposium
http://www.mergelgrotten.com/6e-internationale-symposium-over-oude-mijnbouw-valkenburg-2011/

More info http://www.europa-subterranea.com/symposium-archaeological-mining-history.php

The International Symposium on Archaeological Mining History was established in 2006 when it was held for the first time in Reichelsheim, Germany. In 2007 the members travelled to Freiberg, also in Germany. Both assemblies, focusing on medieval mining, were succesful in bringing reseachers and officials from several European regions together in a discussion about archaeological mining history in all its aspects.

In 2008 the symposium was held in Valkenburg and Maastricht in the South of the Netherlands and in Kanne - Riemst which is a border region to Belgium. The central theme of the symposium was focused on survey, study and protecting and consolidating the relics of ancient mining activity as part of the historical landscape. In 2009 the 4th symposium was held in Reichelsheim again and focused on Recognition, Investigation and Preservation.

Symposium 2010 - Freiberg, Germany

The „Förderverein Himmelfahrt Fundgrube e. V.“ and the „Institute Europa Subterranea“ gladly invite you to the 5th International Symposium on archaeological Mining History.

Date: 21.05 - 24.05.2010
Location: Freiberg, Germany.

29 may – 1 june 2009, Reichelsheim / Odenwald

Ancient mining

Relics of ancient mining activities are part of our European cultural landscape. Since humans learned to apply tools the extraction of stone, ores and mineral resources left its traces in the terrain. Many detailed questions about early mining techniques, the processing of extracted raw materials and also about the meaning of the mining and quarry industries for the social- economic structure and the development of settlements remain unanswered. Regarding these questions, archaeological methods could provide us with new resolution.

Protection

The traces of ancient mining activities are threatened in many European regions, because they often are not recognized as such and accordingly not treated as heritage sites. Mining archaeological research can contribute actively to the protection of historically valuable sites by means of publication and public works in order to establish a more general consciousness regarding these sites.

The organisation of the symposium made a really nice book ! I received it yesterday.

The book will cost euro 30,00 and can be ordered through http://www.beneath-the-lowcountries.nl/

I think the book looks very good and the content is rich...

hallo friends, i took two holiday-days before to go to maastricht. unfortunately my co-driver reached my place at 6.00 in the afternoon, instead of 6 in the morning, as we had discussed two days before.

so we left on friday morning and collected some hayns at zielkowski(?) at mendig (plus magnetit) and reached our meeting in the afternoon.

we had wonderful days of discussion, being underground, making a tourist concept for the community of valkenburg. i had never seen such a good symposium even on a commercial base. jacquo and john were excellent. the hotel and the meeting underground ...... unspeakable.  if you would like to know what we saw, you can get a cheap book on that by jacquo and john. get in contact with them.

there is a next meeting next year. but how to top???? the place is not clear now. the place depends u. a. from are working comitte there. it needs some people to organize it. its not a business for a one man band.

i left the group sunday afternoon to visit nico. he gave me a very warm welcome. the time i got to leave from the symposium flew like a hurricane. thank you nico for your invitation, best wishes to your wife.
i saw wonderful xx also from the "low countries". hope to have an excursion there someday soon.

monday morning i left via longvilly + found wonderful pyros again after digging. my fellow broke a rock just by standing with his strong shoes from the surface. pyros up to 2 cm come out.

no traffic jam - no flash light from speed controll - here on this way again hope that you are getting better.
