The Mercury Mining Museum of Monte Amiata was created thanks to the miners who wanted it to be known what life was like on Monte Amiata for well over a century. The mines led to the development of a mining community deeply tied to its traditions in the past and that was steeped in a life of solidarity that only such a dangerous job could create. In a matter of a few years, it saw its epilogue that left entire communities bereaved of something that was by now imbedded their souls. The exposition route winds round six rooms through which it is possible to follow the activity of the mines and everything related to them. There is technical documentation of research and extraction of mercury, location of the mines in the territory and displayed are tools and instruments used for the extraction by miners. A reminiscent presentation of a small construction of an underground gallery, the ‘discenderia’. By means of documents, pictures and videos conveys the testimony to the tragic consequences of working in mines and the conflicts of the workers. The museum also hosts a high standard mineralogical exhibition of minerals predominantly coming from the mines in the south of Tuscany and Amiata.
